291: The ghostly Ms. Red Yarn

hiya. wow, I'm tired. Hardly slept.

By pawing through bins of supposed Christmas ornaments at the Salvation Army thrift store, I scored a wacky medley of ornaments last week.

Wanna see? Some are, in fact, Christmas-y, some not-so-much.

Like these:

I love them. Handmade yarn dollies.  Love the braided legs on Mr. Blue Yarn and the apron on Ms. Red Yarn. Why blue and red? Why does the red one look so mad?

Here she is, floating over his body:

oooooh, ooh, aohhhh. That was my ghostie sound. Did it come across that way?

Who made these? Who gave them away? Were they intended as  Christmas ornaments?

I want to make some. Big ones. Out of pink and orange and brown yarn.

...................................................

For the last two years I have been listening pretty much nonstop to the same music:

Be Good Tanyas

Jolie Holland

The Weepies

with some Feist, Madelyn Peyroux, Eilen Jewell, Melody Gardot, Carla Bruni and Cat Power thrown in for good measure.

I am trying to incorporate some new music lately. Mining itunes late at night. Cross referencing with reviews on amazon. So, I'm a geek, ok?

Suggestions?

...............................................

There haven't been nearly enough hours of House reruns on tv for my taste, this week.

...............................................

I am more than dipping my toe in to the phenomenon of the social network.

..............................................

What's up, buttercup?

xo, m

I can tell that you are tired! I don't have any music suggestions but hulu.com has all the reruns you could ask for. . . Happy Saturday :)

Melissa, I remember making those as a child. They are really cute! Maybe I'll try one, that would be a fun tutorial. I watch House, too! He's so freaky, I love him. Cranky, yet solid. Doesn't give a flip what anyone says...as you get older, that's what happens. I'm getting like that. I enjoy me, I'm turning into my own best friend! Pretty soon, I'll have obtained hermit status.

They are so funny! I remember making them as a kid too. To be honest they look more like Halloween decorations than Christmas!

One musical suggestion is Tilly And The Wall. I love The Be God Tanyas and while not really the same genre I find myself listening to the at in tandem :).

I haven't heard of any of the groups you mentioned...I must be so old!!...
but have you heard of Pink Martini??...they are a group out of Oregon that incorporates a lot of 50's lounge sounds with other languages and just a very varied mix of music on each CD...
you asked for suggestions...now maybe you can suggest how I can get back on my own blogging trail...I am out of the saddle about 3 weeks now due to HIGHLY uncharacteristic snowfall in the NW....
Happy New Year Miss Sunshine! Oh, and I am really glad you had a good Christmas....I was very sorry to hear that in the past they have been more sad than glad....
Cheers!

My question for 2009 so far: WHERE's the House???? What is up with that? Don't give me the marathon BEFORE I need the marathon. There have been so many House re-runs on in the last three months, I came to depend upon having them around. Like air. Hulu only gets you so far-it only has the current season for a limited amount of times. Not like the good old days of beta Hulu. Oh, I ranted in my first comment to your blog. Is that bad? SOrry. In any event, while I did not have a creepy red yarn ornament thingy (which filled in as a dolly in a pinch), mine was ivory and was a little angel lady. Here's to a bright new year!

We had Santas like that on my tree as a kid. How do you make them?? I must find a tutorial and make them for next year!

As for music, you should check out Tyler Stenson. He has an album on itunes, and you can check him out on his website www.tylerstenson.com He is folksy and I just LOVE him!

Man I haven't seen those yarn dolls in forever! My sister and I used to make larger dolls like that and go around the neighborhood with our wagon and sell them to the neighbors door to door. THat is really funny now that I think of it. That 2 little girls 7 and 9 selling dolls door to door. I wish I could remember how much we charged! We also used to make these little yarn things we called "monsters" and "ghosts". They kind of looked like pac man ghosts out of yarn or like "cousin it". I can't remember but I think they had eyes.
Thanks for the memories I didn't know I had forgotten!

Okay...I want to make some yarn people too. They are adorable. Especially the bitter looking red one. :)

If you're looking to branch, I like OK Go, Dresden Dolls, and the Fratellis. If you're looking to find something more in your line, try GNOD - Global Network of Dreamers at www.gnod.net. If you click on Gnod Music and type in 3 bands you like, it'll tell you some others you might like! I typed in your first 3 bands, and it said you might like Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

Agh!! Totally remember these from the '70's! Only our creature was an octopus. If I remember correctly, from like 30 years ago, we took a bunch of yarn cut to the desired length and tied it together in the center. You do that twice. Lay one in one direction over a styrofoam ball. Lay the second the other way to cover the ball completely. Tie it off on the bottom and then braid all the legs. Make sense? Then we would add googly eyes. Hmmm...I should pull this idea out for a snowy day craft when school is closed. Too cute!
