355: lace/weight

hey!

You are not even going to believe the outrageously beautiful and delicate things that Beth Dunn knitted for me!

I had my eyes closed and my hands cupped to receive, when she placed the lightest, smallest bit of knitting into my palms...

Hmmm. What could this be? Too light for socks. (omg, did I ever show you the socks she knitted for me??)

Oh, wow.

Ahhhhhh!!!! Lovely lacey covers for my little paws!

Look at this detail!

They are a deep navy color, knitted with size zero needles from some lace-weight fancypants wool yarn (malabrigo). Beth is kind of a yarn snob (compliment!), which works out for me quite nicely :o)

They are so great, aren't they?!

(((Thanks, Beth, you knitting superstar.)))

No, I still haven't gotten my engagement ring sized! I am working on losing the Book Weight first, otherwise it will have to get sized twice!

And yes, I actually am eating well... been a whole month now! I am using the LoseIt app for my hand-me-down ipod Touch. It's basically just a calorie counter, but I really like it. I like the gadgety aspect which makes it kind of  like a game. It is helping me to be more reasonable about what I eat! And yes, I have actually lost a few pounds.

I am managing to work out once or twice a week for now. Diet is always the hardest part for me, so I am ok with waiting on the exercise for now while I really get comfortable with eating better after several months of a free-for-all!

For me, getting in enough water (ok, ANY water) has always been a struggle... turns out, there actually is an app for that. I have been using Water Your Body app for 3 weeks and now I drink 8-9 cups a day! Of course, the apps aren't magic or anything, you have to actually do the stuff you're s'posed to do, but the keeping track is what makes it kind of fun and interesting and, well, it's turning into a habit!

Are you eating well or trying to lose weight or get into some healthy habits? If so, what is keeping you on track and motivating you?

If you tried at the begining of the year but have fallen off the wagon, you can always re-commit!

I tend to shy away from talking about weight loss because, well, I hate to be so typical! But weight and food have always been an issue and probably always will be for me. (I have talked about the food issue, but not really weight.) And I know that so many other women struggle with this too, so let's just talk about it, ok? I even almost didn't share about those apps, but I thought I would just experiment with being open about it and see how it feels. Ok? Are you with me?

xo,

melissa

I'm with ya. I've been reading the Kind Diet and the Full Plate diet and by just adding as much fiber as I can to everything - I lost 7lbs in about two weeks. I have quite a bit to lose and it's tough when you truly love food. I'm with ya though, don't really like to talk about it but can use the encouragement once in a while. That being said "keep it up, you can do it; don't be on a diet, just think about making the wisest choices you can and be healthy!" (okay, pep talk for the day over)

Oh gosh, I can dish about the weight loss thing. At 5'0", every calorie goes straight to my butt (or my waist, on the pretty common occasion that my butt is saturated with fat cells ). It doesn't help that I am married to a chef with a penchant for butter.

As far as intake goes, I try to be pretty minimalist during the day, and then have an indulgent dinner (same stuff as usual, but maybe only half of what hubby puts on my plate - he and/or the dog lap up the rest).

Then there is the whole exercise thing...I find it brutal to really diet AND exercise, so I do both kind of halfway. I used to love going to yoga classes, but now I'm too busy with patterns and my kid for that whole scene. There are actually some amazing yoga classes on youtube and TV, so now I'm practicing in my non-judgemental living room. I'm always the stretchiest one in the class, and I don't get karmic demerits for checking my email during a commercial break ;) !

+1 on the weight loss thing. I even started an online quilting bee with 11 other women who are tackling that monster - we are the Incredible Shrinking Quilters! I love technology, too - and anything that helps tracking what I eat helps. Just knowing I have to record it somehow helps keep me on track - it makes me ask myself, "do I really want this?" Sometimes the answer is yes, and then I eat it without guilt.

Love the gloves - wearing that style myself at the moment. Re weight loss - the only thing that keeps me off the chocolate is sewing, cos I can't do both at once (sticky fingers and fabric don't mix . . . ). If it wasn't for craft, I'd be twice the woman and half as happy! Good luck and keep us up to date with your progress - it's such a universal thing and we can all relate to it! Jen x

Those gloves are so beautiful! how lucky you are!
The whole diet and excercise thing seems like it is an issue for all of us women... I lost 30 pounds a few years ago and am still trying to lose another 20... I try not to be to hard on myself and my goal is to work out 3-4x's per week and eat better... oh cutting soda out all together and limiting sugar helped me alot- did you know there is sugar is catsup??? I love catsup! ahhhhh! anyway, don't give up!

Those gloves are DIVINE! And just beautiful on your tiny little paws. :)

I'm so proud of you for taking the steps to get healthy. I've been faithfully hitting the gym and just started using a couch to 5K app to help me get running again.

I find myself so frustrated that my weight has suffered because of my inability to be a good vegetarian. Even vegetarian I was okay with, until I read about eating local, and then I didn't even have enough vegetables to choose from :-) But I'm giving it a great new push these days, new recipes, new found TIME for cooking. I've also found fitday.com a great help with managing calories in the past, just FYI to those without iPhones/iTouches.

and... Beth is a goddess.

M, I've fallen off the wagon so many times I'm bruised from head to toe but this year...THIS year, I'm committed to do something about it. My issue isn't food per say but moving, or rather a lack of it, from being sedentary all day at computer. That and not drinking water (hub insists I must be part camel going for days w/o drinking - not good!!). I'm spurred on as you share your own challenges. And thanks for the 'water' app, I'll check that out. I bought a time cube (used by organizers) and I'm using that to remind me to move and drink throughout the day. The beeping from it every hour is freakin' annoying though! hah! All the best.

Yes as many have said it is an issue for many women including me. Food is all that kills the pain sometimes. Up and down. Joined the gym with my guy and we've been there three or four times a week for two months so far. Still need to master the food thing (again) since I know how and have done it before. I'm with you.

I want to learn how to knit & crochet. Everything is so awesome! I can get on and off exercise too easily - so for me, really controlling my calories has been more successful. And forgiving myself. That is also helpful. Thanks, Melissa for always being so real!

i'm with ya dear. i want to be a totally healthy human. and weight issues always bring me down.

just this month, i've started logging my eating at www.fatsecret.com. what a bad name! but so far, it's helped me be more mindful of just what i am eating.

exercise is next ;)

I'm so with you - and I wrote about this on my own blog just a few days ago. I've been keeping a food journal on livestrong.com and after just a few days, I could see that most of the time I wasn't eating *enough*. And then, of course, you wind up making up the calorie difference eventually, with things that aren't good for you. At the root of it seems to be this assumption that I'm too busy to take care of myself. What's up with that?! I was never that way when I was single.

Lovely mitts!!

I was really trying to lose weight just by dieting. Now, I'm just exercising, and I've been reminded just how much it helps my mood. Which, in turn makes the food issues easier.
