408: omgLondon part 6 The V and A, sculptures

Back to London for a bit, y'all.

The fabulous, amazing, wonderful Victoria and Albert Museum. Known to all as The V and A. Sounds like the VNA but it's a whole other thing.

I have several posts on this place alone. We'll start with this hall of stone and marble sculptures, if that's cool with you.

Woe is she:

Row upon row of marble busts:

I couldn't get over the detail. I mean, look at these crazy-ass eyebrows:

And this guy's curlicue hairdo:

Someone chiseled those fine tresses from marble, yo. That is just craziness.

Some lovely waves and tendrils:

The eyes are creepy, but I love the little oak leaf ornamentation here:

Pretty hands:

I hate just drawing hands. I can't imagine sculpting them.

Beth and I were each walking around separately when I saw this guy:

Later, I was like, "And there was this one statue that had a 'Whatchu talkin' 'bout , Willis?' look on his face."

And she was like, " I know! I saw that guy!"

See what I mean?

xo,

melissa

I always love these kinds of sculptures. That's one thing I love to look for in NYC and Central Park. I am signed up for a drawing class, and I've always wanted to sketch a sculpture like one of these.

Amazing! I've never seen anything even close to this in person. What an amazing trip. The Woe is She girl is beautiful. Lucky ducks!

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to the V&A. It's quite possibly my favourite London museum & I always start my visits in the Sculpture Hall - to gaze in awe & think of the artists who created those beautiful pieces.

gorgeous photos! love these great expressions. i try to imagine what face i would make and or how i might stand if some famous sculptor ever comes along and insists on sculpting my likeness. dramatic? silly? pensive? glamorous? so many choices....

So awesome. I've always been totally enthralled with marble statues, and I can't even imagine the difficulty and sure skill it takes to work in stone like that. There's no erasing any mistakes!

Lovely post! I just got back from London a few weeks ago. I loved the museums and the art that I saw there. You should definitely check out the John Soane museum if you haven't already. It's a townhouse turned museum, filled with paintings, marble sculptures and artifacts collected by an 18th century pack rat http://www.soane.org/

Sadly no photography is allowed there, but you can check out my pics from the rest of the trip here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chenreichert/sets/72157624465777600/
